Treatment of dairy cows with antibiotics is hard to avoid, so to minimize the risk of finding traces of antibiotics in milk for human consumption, the European Union has defined common maximum residue limits (MRL) for all pharmaceuticals approved for use in farming. Some European countries use the EU MRL values “as is” and others have made more strict national legislation or rules.
